Setting your first goal in Bao: turn "someday" into a date

2026-07-202 min readBy Naazish Sheikh

A goal in Bao is a real target: a name, a dollar amount, and a date, funded by contributions you actually make. It's not a wish parked in the back of your mind. And that's the whole trick: "someday" never happens because it has nothing to aim at. Give it a date, and it becomes something you can plan around instead of just hope about.

What actually happens when you set a goal?

Think of a goal as a labeled envelope. You fund it directly, so the money inside is money you've actually set aside, not a number you're mentally tracking across a dozen other line items. Each envelope carries a target amount and a target date, and that's it. No spreadsheet, no hidden formula. Just a bucket with a name, a number, and a finish line.

How do I set one up?

  • Name it. Something concrete: "Down payment," not "Savings #3."
  • Set a target amount. The number you actually need.
  • Pick a date. When do you want to get there?
  • Got something saved already? Add it as a starting contribution. Otherwise, start from zero. That's fine too.

A real example

Say you set "Down payment: $12,000 by next June." Bao takes that name, amount, and date and turns it into a simple on-track-or-not view, updated as you contribute, instead of you doing that math by hand every few weeks. (Projections are illustrative, based on what you enter. Not a guarantee.) That view is one piece of a bigger question: which ties into how do I know if I'm on track financially?, since a single goal's status is just one signal among several.

You also don't need the number to be perfectly right on day one. A goal is a direction you can adjust anytime, not a contract you signed with yourself.

It's not just a hunch. A landmark analysis of 94 separate studies covering over 8,000 people found that people who made specific, detailed plans followed through significantly more often than people who only intended to (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006). The hard part was never discipline. It was not knowing what to aim for. A dated goal ends the guessing, and Bao just keeps watch on it from there.

Quick questions

Can I have more than one goal at a time?

Yes. Set as many goals as you want, each with its own name, amount, and date. Bao tracks progress on every one separately, so your down payment and your vacation fund don't get tangled together.

What if I need to change my goal amount or date later?

Goals aren't locked in. If your target amount or date shifts, just update it and Bao recalculates your trajectory from there. No need to start over.

Does Bao guarantee I'll hit my goal?

No. Bao shows you an honest, on-track-or-not picture based on your contributions so far, not a promise. Projections are illustrative estimates, not guarantees of future results.

If there's a "someday" sitting in the back of your mind, Bao can help you turn it into a date. Start your first goal whenever you're ready.
